Learn MoreThe MOYO-FIGO project (Association Between Albuminuria, Subclinical Myocardial Dysfunction, and Type 2 Diabetes among Older Kenyan Adults) is a prospective cross-sectional study exploring the relationship between early kidney damage and heart dysfunction in individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in Kenya. Conducted at Kenyatta National Hospital’s outpatient diabetic clinic, the study seeks to generate local evidence on how albuminuria relates to early changes in heart structure and function. Cardiovascular and kidney diseases are leading complications of T2DM, yet little is known about their combined burden in sub-Saharan Africa. MOYO-FIGO will enroll 200 adults aged 45 and above to assess the co-occurrence of these conditions and identify potential risk markers. Findings from the study aim to support early detection of cardiovascular risk in diabetic patients and inform Kenya’s strategies for integrated management of non-communicable diseases in high-risk populations.
We serve as the Principal Investigator for the MOYO-FIGO study and are responsible for leading and coordinating all aspects of the project. This includes securing funding, designing the study, obtaining ethical approvals, and overseeing day-to-day implementation at Kenyatta National Hospital. We developed the study protocol, defined the methodological framework, and led the development of data collection tools and standard operating procedures. Our team manages participant recruitment, field team training, data collection, and ensures adherence to ethical and scientific standards. We also oversee all aspects of data management through REDCap, implement real-time dashboards for monitoring progress and quality, and will lead the statistical analysis and interpretation of findings. In addition, we are responsible for stakeholder engagement, dissemination of results, and preparation of manuscripts for publication. Through this comprehensive leadership role, we ensure that the MOYO-FIGO project generates high-quality evidence to inform the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases in Kenya and similar settings.
