Advancing Mental Health Equity Through Science & Community Care

The Global Mental Health Research Center (GMHRC) is dedicated to transforming how mental health is understood, treated, and prioritized across Africa and the Global South. Mental health challenges are often invisible but deeply pervasive—affecting every aspect of human wellbeing, from education and employment to physical health and community stability. Yet, they remain under-researched, underfunded, and heavily stigmatized.

GMHRC leads research that centers equity, cultural relevance, and lived experience in mental health care. We investigate the root causes of mental health disorders—including trauma, conflict, poverty, and social exclusion—and develop interventions that are community-based, affordable, and scalable.

Our mission is to close the research and treatment gap by building robust data systems, training frontline mental health workers, and collaborating with policymakers to integrate mental health into broader health and development agendas. We strive to make mental health not just a medical priority, but a human rights imperative.

At GMHRC, we believe that mental health is health, and no one should be left behind.

What We Do

  • Community-Based Mental Health Research

We explore how local environments, social norms, and life stressors shape mental health outcomes. Our work helps design culturally appropriate care models, reduce stigma, and build trust—especially in settings where formal mental health services are scarce or inaccessible.

  • Trauma, Conflict & Displacement Studies

We examine the long-term psychological effects of war, displacement, and humanitarian crises. Our research supports trauma-informed care models, post-conflict recovery programs, and mental health integration into emergency response and refugee health systems.

  • Policy & Systems Integration

We collaborate with governments and health agencies to embed mental health into national health plans, education systems, and social services. Our policy engagement ensures that mental health receives the funding, workforce, and infrastructure needed to thrive.
