Linking infectious and cardiovascular health to improve early detection and care in East Africa.
Our Specialization in Epidemiological Clinical and Operational Research Methodology (ECORM) is lauching soon.
Learn MoreThe MOTO-OSA project (Obstructive Sleep Apnea Risk and Its Associated Factors Among Motorbike Taxi Riders in Nairobi County) is a cross-sectional study assessing the prevalence and risk factors of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) among motorbike taxi riders, also known as boda boda operators. This group faces long hours, irregular sleep, and physically demanding conditions, placing them at heightened risk for sleep-related disorders. The study collects data on sleep quality, health status, lifestyle behaviors, road safety, and comorbidities, alongside physical assessments such as body measurements and blood pressure. It also explores the relationship between OSA and road traffic accidents, highlighting critical implications for public health and occupational safety. By focusing on this underserved population, MOTO-OSA aims to inform evidence-based strategies for sleep health screening, risk reduction, and workplace safety. The findings are expected to support targeted interventions and policy reforms to improve health outcomes and reduce injury risks among informal transport workers.
As the Principal Investigator of the MOTO-OSA study, we are leading all components of the research. This includes conceptualization, securing funding, ethical approvals, study design, and instrument development. We developed the questionnaire and selected validated tools for assessing sleep apnea and related risk factors. Our team manages training of data collectors, oversees field operations, and ensures adherence to research protocols. We lead data collection, data management (via Open Data Kit), and real-time monitoring through custom-built dashboards. We will also conduct all statistical analyses, interpret results, engage stakeholders, and prepare policy briefs and scientific manuscripts. Our comprehensive leadership ensures methodological rigour, operational efficiency, and actionable findings.
