Exploring the Link Between Infectious Diseases & Chronic Conditions

The Infectious Diseases & NCDs Research Center (IDNC) is at the forefront of uncovering the complex biological and societal links between infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In many African communities, individuals often face overlapping health burdens—where chronic infections like HIV or tuberculosis heighten the risk or severity of conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic lung disorders. IDNC is dedicated to understanding these connections to design more holistic, integrated models of care.

Our research focuses on how infections trigger long-term immunological changes, accelerate chronic disease progression, and create lasting health vulnerabilities. We explore co-infections, immune system responses, and the ripple effects of emerging epidemics on long-term health outcomes.

By bridging infectious disease research with chronic disease management, we are redefining how health systems respond to overlapping epidemics. Our work not only enhances clinical care but also informs public health preparedness, policy development, and community resilience in the face of future health threats. At IDNC, we believe understanding the whole patient begins with understanding the full picture of disease interaction.

What We Do

  • HIV/AIDS & Tuberculosis (TB)

We investigate how chronic infectious diseases like HIV and TB contribute to the development and progression of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. Our research sheds light on the complex biological interactions and helps shape integrated care models that better serve patients dealing with both infectious and chronic conditions.

  • Respiratory Infections & Chronic Lung Disease

We explore how common respiratory infections—including bacterial pneumonia and viral illnesses—impact the onset and severity of long-term lung conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This work supports the creation of early intervention strategies and policy solutions that reduce the burden of chronic respiratory illness, especially in high-risk and low-resource communities.

  • Emerging Infectious Diseases (e.g., COVID-19, Ebola)

We study the lingering health consequences of emerging infections, focusing on how they contribute to long-term complications, immune system dysfunction, and heightened risk for NCDs. Our work informs global preparedness strategies and helps develop long-term care pathways for individuals recovering from severe infections in vulnerable settings.

  • Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)

We study how parasitic and vector-borne diseases such as schistosomiasis, leishmaniasis, and filariasis lead to chronic inflammation, disability, and increased vulnerability to NCDs. Our work informs treatment integration, policy design, and health education efforts to reduce the lifelong burden of NTDs.
