MOTO-CVD

Targeting heart health in Kenya’s informal transport sector through evidence-based insights.

← Back to Projects

Project Summary

The MOTO-CVD project is a cross-sectional study assessing the burden and determinants of cardiovascular risk factors among motorbike taxi riders (boda boda operators) in Nairobi County, Kenya. This informal workforce faces unique health risks due to prolonged sedentary work, high stress, tobacco and substance use, and limited access to routine healthcare. The study investigates modifiable cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, smoking, and physical inactivity, drawing on data from interviews and clinical assessments. It also explores participants’ access to care, medical histories, and treatment adherence to understand structural barriers to prevention and control. As boda boda riders play a vital role in Kenya’s urban transport system, MOTO-CVD aims to generate evidence that informs targeted health interventions, workplace safety strategies, and inclusion in public health policy. Findings will support the development of tailored screening and health promotion programs to improve cardiovascular outcomes in this underserved, high-mobility population.

Our Role in the Project

As the Principal Investigator of MOTO-CVD, we lead the project end-to-end—from conceptualisation and funding to implementation and dissemination. Our team developed the study design, data collection tools, and measurement protocols, ensuring alignment with international standards. We oversee ethical compliance, train and supervise data collectors, and manage the entire data pipeline using KoboToolbox and REDCap. We also design and maintain dashboards for real-time field monitoring. At the conclusion of the study, we will perform statistical analyses, draw insights, and produce manuscripts and policy briefs. Our role ensures the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based findings to inform public health action for informal workers in Kenya.
