Project Summary

The C2REST (Climate Change and Respiratory Health Study) is a three-year research project launched in February 2024 to examine the impact of climate change and air pollution on respiratory health in Nigeria. Focused on Lagos and Ogun States, the study aims to generate evidence for equitable and cost-effective public health interventions. Led by a consortium including Teesside University, University of Lagos, and Covenant University, the project combines epidemiological research, environmental monitoring, community engagement, and health economics. It explores how air quality, climate variability, and social factors influence respiratory outcomes in vulnerable populations. The study includes air pollution monitoring, lung function assessments, interviews, and a review of climate-health policies. It also models the cost-effectiveness of interventions to support decision-making. Through strong stakeholder involvement, C2REST seeks to inform national strategies and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity for climate-resilient healthcare, contributing to the prevention of respiratory diseases in the context of a changing environment.

Our Role in the Project

For the C2REST Nigeria Study, we are not only co-investigator but our team plays a critical role in ensuring methodological and analytical rigour throughout the research process. We are responsible for guiding the study design by providing statistical expertise, including sample size calculations and the development of a comprehensive statistical analysis plan. We lead on data management using REDCap, ensuring secure, standardized, and high-quality data collection across study sites. To support real-time decision-making and oversight, we develop interactive dashboards for ongoing study reporting and data monitoring. At the conclusion of the data collection phase, we will conduct in-depth statistical analyses to evaluate the relationships between climate-related exposures and respiratory health outcomes. Additionally, we contribute to the interpretation of findings and the preparation of manuscripts for publication, supporting the broader goal of translating research into policy-relevant evidence. Our contribution ensures that the study is not only scientifically robust but also operationally efficient and impact-driven.
